Performers College holds masterclass with Imelda Staunton CBE
Performers College students were recently treated to an incredible masterclass from Oscar-nominated, Olivier and BAFTA-award-winning actor Imelda Staunton CBE.
The stage and screen legend, known for roles in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Shakespeare in Love, and Netflix’s The Crown, as well as numerous West End musicals including Sweeney Todd, Gypsy and the highly anticipated Hello Dolly which begins its run this summer at the London Palladium, joined students from across the Essex campus for a masterclass in acting and performance through song.
The masterclass was hosted and facilitated by BA Musical Theatre and Dance Deputy Course Leader Kieran Jae, who had previously performed in the London revival of Gypsy alongside Imelda, who portrayed Mama Rose.
“It was my immense privilege to welcome to Performers College my friend and colleague Imelda Staunton. Imelda kindly offered to come to our campus and give her time to talk with the students and hold an acting through song masterclass. It was amazing for the students to hear the inspiring anecdotes, advice and professional insight she offered. Whether actively participating in the masterclass or listening from the audience, everyone left uplifted and focused on being better versions of the performers they were when they walked in.”
Eleanor Lamb, a first-year BA (Hons) Acting for Stage, Screen and Digital Media student, reflected on her experience of attending the event:
This was such a brilliant experience and I felt so inspired after it. Hearing from Imelda directly and being able to ask questions in such a safe space was really special. It’s something that I will never forget, and I feel so lucky that this opportunity was given to us. She was so kind and down to earth and gave us invaluable first-hand advice that we can all carry with us moving forward into the industry.
Third Year BA (Hons) Musical Theatre and Dance student Isobel Calcutt also attended, and added:
It was so inspiring to hear from someone who has had massive success, while also demonstrating such hard-working values. Imelda is so authentic in her performances too. I feel very privileged to have attended.
Masterclass host Kieran Jae added:
I am so grateful to Imelda for sharing her career highs and lows, as well as her best tips on how to succeed. It will be a day I will not forget for a long time. The Queen came to our visit our family and we were not disappointed.
Thanks to Imelda Staunton for an incredible masterclass, from everyone at Performers College.
